Club 47 opens in Cambridge.

January 6, 1958

Operated by Joyce Kalina and Paula Kelley, it is located at 47 Mount Auburn Street. Originally a jazz club that opens with a performance of the Steve Kuhn Trio, it soon becomes the center of the Boston-area folk music scene. Performers include Joan Baez, the Charles River Valley Boys, Bob Dylan, the Jim Kweskin Jug Band, Taj Mahal, Tom Rush, Dave Van Ronk, Susan Vega, Doc Watson, Muddy Waters, Eric von Schmidt, Jackie Washington, and Peter Wolf. The club moves to 47 Palmer Street in 1963 and closes on April 28, 1968. Reopened as the Passim Coffeehouse by Bob and Rae Ann Donlin in 1969, it subsequently becomes the non-profit foundation Passim Center.
